Being a Tourist In: Nashville

December 26, 2017

Hey travelers, merry Christmas!  I hope your holiday was filled with friends, family, and maybe even a little bit of snow!  Welcome to my Nashville, Tennessee travel guide.  After my college graduation last week, my boyfriend and I visited music city for a few days and it was AMAZING so keep reading to hear all about what we did while we were there!

Starting off, we stayed in an Airbnb instead of a hotel.  It was our very first time using Airbnb and it ended up being perfect for us.  We rented an entire apartment and it was only around $80 a night, which is a lot cheaper than most of the hotels in the Nashville area!  We were only about fifteen minutes away from the downtown area and the apartment was the cutest!  We will definitely be using Airbnb for our next getaway.  If you haven’t used Airbnb, use this referral link (www.airbnb.com/c/allisons3280) to get started with planning your next trip!

From Harrisonburg, it took about eight hours to get to Nashville.  Because we wanted to have a chance to explore before the sun went down, we left at four o’clock in the morning and it was a pretty smooth drive.  We were a bit surprised though, when we were driving, because the clocks switched back – we had changed time zones and didn’t know we were going to!  It ended up being really convenient because we got there a whole hour earlier than expected but it definitely threw us off for a second!

When we got to the city, we hit the ground running.  Nashville is known for good antiquing, which is something my boyfriend and I both love to do, so we went to all the best shops.  We started with the Nashville Farmer’s Market, which isn’t an antique shop but was still a good way to meet some local people and get a feel for what was to come.  Next, we went to the 8th Ave Antique Mall and this is where I hit the jackpot!  Coming to Nashville, I only wanted one thing and that was a cow skull to hang as decoration in my new apartment and I found it!  Speaking of my new apartment, keep an eye out for moving blogs – they’ll be coming soon!  Moving on from that shop, we headed to Gaslamp and Gaslamp Too and these were two shops that I loved.  They had so much inventory and a good variety of styles and it wasn’t crowded at all.  After this, we headed to the Downtown Antique Mall and this one has to be my favorite out of all of them.  It’s located in this really cool, old building and I wish I could live in it!  It had a really neat vibe and I’d love to go back.

We had had a pretty packed day with the long drive and then running around to all the different shop locations but we ended our day with walking the strip.  This is where all the famous Nashville bars and souvenir shops are.  It was awesome!  There was so much to do and look at and in every bar you could hear someone performing that could’ve been on the radio and it was a really incredible experience.  My favorite tourist shop along the strip was Jack Daniel’s Genuine Goods.  They had a lot of cute trinkets that weren’t too cheesy and they actually had a really great decal selection as well!  I’d definitely recommend stopping by if you’re visiting Nashville for the first time.

Day two in Nashville was jam packed just like day one.  We started off with going to the Loveless Cafe for brunch!  I had read about the Loveless Cafe but hadn’t seen many pictures and it was so much cooler than I expected!  It was more of a compound rather than a restaurant – they had a general store, souvenir shop, and a wedding venue all on the same property!  I got pancakes and my boyfriend got a breakfast sandwich and they were both pretty good.  Not to-die-for but the atmosphere was one of a kind.  Next, we drove to Hey Rooster General Store because I had heard they had some cute Nashville apparel and I wanted to pick up something to remember this trip by.  It didn’t disappoint and I wish I could go back every weekend!

The Nashville Parthenon was next on our list and we loved it!  It’s surrounded by a little park and walking around it was a good breather from the city buildings.  Luckily, it wasn’t too cold during our time there so we were able to enjoy our time.  From there, we walked about a block over to a cookie dough shop called No Baked.  No Baked was one of my favorite places we visited!  It’s basically an ice cream shop but instead of ice cream, it’s cookie dough that you can eat.  There were a ton of cookie dough flavors and the woman that served us was so sweet.  Coming here is a must!

After getting our sugar fix from No Baked, we drove across town to the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge.  This gave us an amazing view of the Nashville skyline and you can see the strip from the bridge too.  Parking is also really convenient around the bridge so if you’re looking for something to do around the strip in the daytime, this is it!  The Nashville mural was next on our list.  Somehow, almost no one else was around when we got to the mural!  It’s an extremely popular tourist location so I guess we just got lucky but it was so fun to be able to see it in person after seeing it on Instagram and Pinterest for so many years.  For dinner that night, we went to the Flying Saucer and it was really low-key and wonderful.  We will definitely be going back next time we’re in Nashville!

Sadly, our third day in Nashville was our last day.  We got a pretty early start and headed to downtown Franklin, TN.  This is a town that’s about thirty minutes outside of Nashville but it’s definitely worth the drive.  They had the cutest little strip of shops (with an Anthropolgie!) and everyone was so, so nice.  That’s something that we found a lot of in Nashville – nice people!  We ended our whirlwind trip with a coffee break at a coffee shop called the Frothy Monkey and were on our way.

I’m so thankful to have had such a wonderful graduation trip and I can’t wait for the next time I’ll be back in Nashville.  Everyone was so sweet and the city has so much to offer!  Thanks for reading this week’s post and I’ll be back next week to show you what I got for Christmas this year.  See you then!

College

I Graduated // My JMU Experience

December 19, 2017

Hi!  Today, I have a really exciting post to share because I GRADUATED COLLEGE!  I can’t believe the day finally came.  Keep reading to find out more about my graduation day and to hear a little bit about my overall experience at James Madison University.

Graduation was a blast!  For a while, I didn’t even want to go to my actual graduation because, at least at JMU, you have to sit in an assigned seat so you’re not next to any of your friends and also I didn’t necessarily want to stick around all week after finals ended to just walk across a stage.  But I’m so glad I did!  A lot of my family came to town and a good amount of my friends were there as well so it was really nice to have so many people that I love all together.  As far as my overall experience at JMU, I’ve broken it up into different categories so scroll down to hear what I liked and didn’t like!

Choosing JMU  In the beginning of my college search, JMU wasn’t even on my list because I thought they didn’t have a football team (why the heck did I think that!?) and I was looking for a school with sports and a lot of school spirit.  After my junior year of high school, my family and I did a college road trip and, while we were on our way to Virginia Tech, we were driving through James Madison and my parents persuaded me to stop and look around because we were there anyway.  As soon as I got out of the car, I fell in love!  JMU is so pretty and I knew right away that it was the school for me.

Distance From Home  JMU is about 4 hours away from where I grew up and that turned out to be the perfect distance for me!  It’s close enough where I could get home in a few hours if I needed to but it’s far enough that I definitely experienced a different landscape and was pushed out of my comfort zone in terms of not knowing everyone that lives in the area, like in my hometown.  It’s also close enough to do a little weekend trip when I want to go back and visit friends!

Harrisonburg  I really liked living in Harrisonburg!  The city is definitely the way it is because JMU is located there but I had a great time.  There are a lot of restaurants and things to do and downtown is so cute!  There are a ton of little boutiques (the Yellow Button is my FAVORITE, go visit!) and coffee shops and you can always find a parking spot.  The only thing I didn’t love about Harrisonburg is the mall.  It’s gotten a little bit better recently because they added an Ulta and an H&M but it’s not like the malls you’re probably used to.  But hey, it was good for my wallet!

My Major & Minor  My major was my favorite thing about being in college!  I was a Media Arts & Design major with a concentration in Integrated Advertising & Corporate Communication.  For most of my college career, I also had a minor in Studio Art.  Within my major and minor, I learned a lot about the advertising and marketing industry, graphic design, photography and videography, principles of art, and writing.  My major prepared me for a career in a lot of different areas and I’m very thankful for that.  It also helped me develop many of my passions and I love, love, loved it!  If you go to JMU and want to chat more about the SMAD program, please comment below – I’d love to reach out to you!

Clubs & Organizations  Throughout my time at JMU, I was involved in many clubs and organizations!  My main activities were Sigma Alpha Omega, InterVarsity, and the Madipalooza Marketing Committee.  Sigma Alpha Omega is the Christian sorority at JMU and this was my favorite organization that I was a part of.  Joining a sorority that was full of women who were like-minded and focused on the same types of things as me was really cool!  InterVarsity was also an organization that I spent a lot of time in during my first couple years in college.  IV is a fellowship on campus and they offer small groups and a large group church-like talk and it really helped me find my place at JMU!  The Madipalooza Marketing Committee is also something fun I did so if you don’t know what Madipalooza is, look it up – it’s incredible!

Housing  I lived in a lot of different places during my time at JMU – Weaver Hall, Chesapeake Hall, the Grace Street Apartments, Campus View Apartments, and the Copper Beech Townhomes.  It’s nice because there are a lot of options when it comes to places to live in Harrisonburg and a lot of them are good ones!  You can also choose to live by yourself or with others.  Some places even offer up to 6 bedroom units!  I recently did a blog post all about the best places to live on and off campus at JMU so click here to check it out.

That’s all for today’s post!  I really hope you enjoyed it and if you have any other questions about JMU or college in general, please write them in the comments.  I’d love to share all the information that I can with you!  Have a wonderful week and I’ll see you next Tuesday for another post.

Fashion

Bracelets & Fringe ft. Pura Vida Bracelets

December 12, 2017

Hey hey fashion lovers!  I hope December is going amazingly well for you!  Today, I’m working with a company called Pura Vida Bracelets to bring you this post.  In high school, I used to go into PacSun and purchase bracelet after bracelet from this company, so when they reached out to ask if I wanted to collaborate, I said heck yes!  I’ve been wearing their merchandise for years and I can’t wait to show you my newest additions.  Keep reading to find out which of their bracelets are my favorites!

The bracelets that I’m wearing in the photos above are called Silver Moon Black (click here), Seed Bead Whitewash (click here), and Seed Bead Popsicle (click here).  I really love the style of these bracelets.  They aren’t big or chunky but they still add so much to your outfit!  Another thing I love about this company is that they work really closely with different charities around the world.  Why wouldn’t you want to support a company like this one!?

That’s it for today’s post!  All the photos included in today’s post were taken by Hunter Carrico – go follow him on Instagram at @huntercarrico for some incredible work!  I’ll also be posting some additional photos from this shoot on my Instagram, so make sure to follow me at @allisantmyer as well.  Have a great week!

Holiday

Holiday Gift Guide for: HER

December 5, 2017

Hello and welcome back to my second official gift guide of this year’s Christmas season!  For one of my posts over the past couple weeks, I posted my Holiday Gift Guide for: HIM so if you haven’t checked that out yet, head on over (click here) for some fun gift ideas for the man in your life.  Alright, let’s get started with this week’s post!

My first gift idea is a True Grit pullover sweatshirt.  The official name of the one I’m thinking of is the True Grit Unisex Frosty Tipped Pile 1/4 Zip and it’s the comfiest piece of clothing you could ever own!  Honestly, I’ve wanted one for years but it’s a little pricey and I never wanted to spend that much money on myself so it would be an amazing gift for anyone in your life.  My favorite color is Charcoal but the Putty and Brown colors are incredible too!  Plus, it’ll keep your girlfriend warm on all your wintertime dates!

The next gift idea is a Daniel Wellington watch.  This idea is perfect for the girl that’s about to enter the workforce.  With graduation getting closer and closer, I’ve been eyeing some more professional accessories and a nice watch is definitely on my list.  I currently have a brown Daniel Wellington watch but I’ve totally worn it out so I’m thinking it’d be nice to add a black one to my collection!  Let me know your favorite watch color in the comments down below.

My third gift idea is a bit different and it’s taking your girlfriend to dinner and a show.  Growing up, my family would always go to Sight & Sound Theatre in Lancaster, PA around Christmastime and it was a blast!  I’ve been wanting to go back for a few years now and I think it would be such a great holiday date idea.  You can choose your restaurant of choice for dinner before the show and you’re set!

The next idea I have is a JBL Flip 4 bluetooth speaker.  My boyfriend and I purchased one of these about six months ago and it’s amazing!  The sound quality is incredible and it’s splash proof too.  We loved that aspect about it because it was awesome to be able to take it out to the pool this summer and it also comes in a ton of different colors so you can choose whichever one you like best!

My last gift idea for this post is a personalized ring.  For my boyfriend and I’s one year anniversary, he gave me a personalized, engraved ring and I wear it every single day.  It was such a thoughtful gift and it means so much to me!  Find out your girlfriend’s favorite jewelry type, whether it’s rings or necklaces or whatever, and head over to Etsy and find something super cool and unique!  She’ll love it.

That’s all my gift ideas for this post, I hope you found it helpful!  I’ll be back next week with another brand new post, but until then, follow me on Instagram (@allisantmyer) for updates as to what might be coming next on the blog.  Have a great week!
